Principles of Epidemiology in Exercise and Public Health
Alexandria Fletcher-Duncan's areas of expertise include epidemiology, infection prevention and control, cancer epidemiology and health disparities. Her interests center on translating epidemiologic methods into real-world public health and clinical practice, particularly in the areas of infectious disease prevention, cancer outcomes and health equity.
Fletcher-Duncan is an epidemiologist, researcher and infection prevention professional whose work focuses on applying epidemiologic methods to improve patient outcomes and address health disparities. In addition to teaching epidemiology, she works in infection prevention in an academic cancer center, where she conducts surveillance and epidemiologic investigations related to health care-associated infections and develops evidence-based strategies to improve patient safety.
Her research interests include cancer epidemiology, health disparities, hereditary cancer risk, access to genetic counseling and testing and outcomes among surgical oncology populations. Her doctoral research examined equitable outcomes and interventions related to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome among women. Her research has also examined disparities in ovarian cancer outcomes and access to genetic counseling and testing among women at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.
Fletcher-Duncan has presented cancer epidemiology research at scientific meetings and contributes to multidisciplinary research focused on cancer outcomes, infection prevention and health equity. Prior to her work in cancer epidemiology and infection prevention, she served as a Government Operations Consultant- Epidemiologist with the Florida Department of Health, conducting communicable disease surveillance, outbreak investigations and public health response activities.
Her professional activities also include multidisciplinary patient safety and high-reliability initiatives aimed at reducing preventable harm and promoting consistent, evidence-based standards of care.
